This is a thread specifically for checking that web models I've come across actually fit the period (and the logistical limits of the SM project at this point).
Many of these models are untextured, but ignore that. I just want to get consensus on what is and isn't appropriate, and also what could be left out for now.
What I mean is there are quite a few nice oriental & celtic buildings (for e.g.), from this period that I would love to include but I realise that's better of left for a future version (via tilesets). Certainly I feel that way about the Asian stuff - amazing stuff, same period, but very different architecture and political/social conditions. But I'm not 100% sure about celtic stuff...
Also there is a glut of castles, and good ones. So we can afford to be pretty choosy with which ones we pick.
1. early bombard cannon
2.
3. "celtic castle"
4. Now apart from needing a texture overhaul, this one feels a little "fantasy" to me, like a house combined with a castle. Could this be real (even if it takes some modification)?
I hope so...
5. fantasy or real?
6. This church has come up before but I was wanting clarification. Is anyone aware of a church that actually has a steeple like that? It'll be easy enough to fill in that section if necessary.
7. This one was part of a scene and caught my attention, no idea what it is though...
8. I know gypsies were around in medieval times, but I have no idea if this sort of caravan/wagon would be at all period appropriate.
1) although it depends on the period, generally speaking it doesn't convince me
2) tempted to say 'no way', but curious about Alex's opinion
3) yes
4) it 'could' be real, but I'ld keep it in any case
5) looks like two possible buildings put together to something not really likely
6) the steeple does not look realistic, but I love the building
7) nice, could we get a few more pics from other angles?
8) Gypsies were certainly a common view in Europe throughout the middle-ages. so far I reserve judgement on the cart until I get to few into the matter a bit closer
1) not medieval. Cannons from the medieval times had no decoration. It's just a big steel pipe:
2) not medieval: castles were military buildings back then. The steeples are too "round". It looks like a castle from Disneyland. In the 17th and 18th century castles became homes and then decorated with round towers etc...
3) early medieval, I would even say German or Gaul. So OK!
4) could be a medieval mansion from the Alps (Austrian-Swiss style).
5) see 2) (too Disney-like)
6) It's possible that a steeple has no cover. In the city were I was born (Leuven) is a church that looks like this:
(Sint Geertrui)
And another one has a clock on the outside of the tower (they ran out of money :p )
So a church can be strange sometimes... Don't know if that one is real but with some work you could make something out of it... But most churches have a covered roof...
7) it looks like a house (the roof in the middle?) with a wall around... But no idea what that is...
8) Way too advanced for the medieval times. It looks like a caravan from the pioneers in the Wild West. A medieval wagon is very basic (like the ones in africa):
thanks a lot for your informative responses guys, much appreciated!
Well I've found another lucrative bunch of free models which, while they look OK to me, I thought was worth checking before I start turning them into game objects.
OK, I'll take a look. I haven't actually opened the models yet (just spent ages downloading them one at a time from megaupload.com), so fingers crossed they aren't frozen as wholes. But pretty nice bunch hey? Increasingly though, as the models come together, it's apparent how much of a need for low wealth housing there is...
