SD vs HD

After Manchou said that zoom 5 (which is a lot more important than zoom 6 imo), looks just as good in HD I had to run some tests. Here is the results of the first of these, a windmill done in SD & HD in Max 2010. These photos are uncompressed .png

ZOOM 6 (HD, SD)

My take on this is that there is a significant loss of quality in Z5 with the HD model. Look at the away sloping roof, it is much nicer on the SD model. In Z6, of course the HD model looks far better. But are the gains made in Z6 worth the loss made in Z5? My opinion is still that they are not. But the jury is still out...

For me the render in HD at zoom 5 is better too, there s more constrast, and that show details After, the render between the preview in Max and the gmae render is different, in Max the render is better than the game, for several of my BAT when the quality is too bad, i do ReFishing, and i've got a preview quality, optimal quality, it take more time than a simple SD export but it's the price for a better render ...

I don't quite follow you there... What's ReFishing? Are you saying I can make the HD Z5 better than in the above photo?

Yes! The refishing i a method, i leanred by Orange (TSC) it is to replace FSH of your exported model by a new FSH from your preview model in Max !

I want to make the right decision regarding SD & HD, and I need HD to look as good as it can to be able to make a proper choice.

I think the HD with the ReFishing is the good choice, but it's very slow to do this method, if an SD export be can do in 10 minutes, an HD export with ReFishing can take 40-60 minutes, but the render is not the same ! And ther is an another solution, SD + ReFishing, you export your BAT in SD and you replace the zoom 6's FSHs by HD preview, and you have a BAT with SD quality in zoom 5 and preview HD in zomm 6 ! I'll do an example with simple model but with details ! and you could se the difference !

lol, we speaking about the best solution, to have the best render in the game ! I do my tests, and it's not conlusive ! I don't see the diffrence between the HD and HD+ReFishing(but my model was to simple :/) and it's dangerous to do an SD+ReFishing because when i change FSHs, there is a lag, At the fianal, reamain only 3 three solutions, the HD the HD+ReFishing and the SD ...

But a thing could be do, you export two models, one in SD and other in HD, you cut zoom's 5 FSHs in the SD model to replace those of FSHs of HD model, and after you do the ReFishinf for the zoom 6 ! I'll try that :)

I get the drift as far as terms go, but never made a BAT. So I guess I leave the technical discussion to you guys. Still, as I said, I like HD and in my opinion one can see the difference even in Zoom 5.
